Phenoxyethanol: A reliable preservative for protein-containing products
Proteins (collagen, keratin, silk, soy protein) are an ideal breeding ground for microorganisms. Cosmetic formulations containing high protein loads require broad-spectrum preservatives effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi.
Looking for an effective way to preserve the quality of protein-containing products? Consider phenoxyethanol!
Why choose phenoxyethanol?
- It has a pronounced bactericidal and moderate fungicidal effect, reliably preventing the growth and reproduction of microorganisms.
- It is widely used in the cosmetics industry due to its global approval as a safe preservative: approximately 50% of cosmetic products contain phenoxyethanol.
- It is economical and easy to use: it is affordable and has a liquid form that is easy to incorporate into formulations.
- It is highly compatible with various proteins. Wide working pH range from 3 to 12.
- The permissible safe concentration in cosmetics is no more than 1% (according to TR CU 009/2011).
We offer phenoxyethanol-based preservatives:

Interesting fact: The microbiological properties of phenoxyethanol were first reported in 1944. Phenoxyethanol is found in nature—for example, in grapefruit, avocado, and green tea. It has a faint rose scent.
Scientific rationale: Research confirms the high effectiveness of phenoxyethanol as a preservative when used at recommended dosages. Phenoxyethanol's mechanism of action is based on its inhibition of enzymes involved in the Krebs cycle, causing loss of control over cell membrane permeability and subsequent leakage of intracellular material from the microbial cell, leading to a loss of viability.
